When successful health industry professionals Sarah & Simon came to organising their wedding at prestigious Sopwell House hotel they knew they wanted more than the in-house DJ could deliver. Step up Showtime Events and our very own Olly Murs lookalike, DJ Mark! A perfect combination of simple DJ rig, white twinkly floor, elegant uplighting, a big chocolate fountain and Showtime’s commitment to top-notch service meant that the event looked and felt first class. ‘Get Lucky’ might sound great on the dance floor right now, but nobody wants to take a gamble on their evening bash being anything but the best! Luckily, the team at Showtime Events have put together their top tips to make your reception tip-top!

  • Gone are the days of booking a DJ over the phone and then keeping your fingers crossed! Insist on meeting the company for a consultation with them and check-out their testimonials from previous clients.
  • Make sure you get to meet the actual DJ who will be hosting your evening reception. This is important as some agencies will not allocate a DJ until the day! Get to know the DJ a little. This really does help on the day of the wedding; after all you don’t want a stranger at your party...
  • Discuss their personal experience and ask for testimonials. As with all other suppliers, hearing the same name recommended to you from several sources is a good start. The company’s website will also tell you a lot about them. Look to see what venues recommend them.
  • Using the preferred suppliers list from your venue really helps you judge the quality, although try to avoid companies that work solely in one venue as the resident DJ can become stale very quickly. You need someone who is moving around to different types of events and venues all the time to keep them fresh.
  • Be clear in your own mind what you are looking for – remember one person’s cheesy party hell could be another person’s dancefloor heaven! Thinking about good previous events that you have been to can help here.
  • The DJ should definitely be looking for you to provide a list of your requests. Remember though, just because it sounds great in the garden at a barbecue, doesn’t mean it will blow up the dance floor. It’s the tracks that make you smile that we want to know about! Your ‘don’t play’ list is vital too.
  • A great wedding DJ should be familiar with all styles of music and shouldn’t have to play ‘that Abba song’ to get the floor going! Find someone who can cater for the more modern tastes if that’s what you like. Remember, there is room for all styles of music at your party.
  • At your consultation, build a show that suits your taste, budget and venue. The DJ should help you design a show that fits with your vision. This means simple decor lighting for some couples and lasers, strobes, bubbles & dry ice for others! Consider the set-up time when choosing. Anything over an hour is too long. After all, who wants to wait to party!
  • The say in life that you get what you pay for and DJ services are no exception. Remember your wedding reception is usually a third of the wedding day itself and the part most guests will remember. Don’t skimp. Set a sensible mid-range budget and you’ll get great value for money from an experienced wedding DJ.
  • Always check with your venue about what types of equipment the DJ can bring. Most venues don’t allow smoke machines anymore and confetti is becoming less popular with some. But there are still plenty of options left to build the perfect evening bash!
  • Many city & suburban venues are now starting to install sound limiters (very tough for live bands!). A good DJ should have experience of working with these and it shouldn’t dampen the party mood as long as everyone is sensible. Remember it’s a wedding reception not a nightclub, the music needs to be at a level such that people nearer the back of the room can chat without shouting. If you want to dance, come closer.
  • Choose a DJ that suits your style. If you don’t want him or her to chat on the mic, then say so. Often less is more – some of your guests might not appreciate being dragged up to dance to the Macarena in front of their relatives! A good DJ will let the music do the talking, but can inject energy into the room when needed.

Once you have everything in place then you can just relax and enjoy it!

Showtime Top Tip

When you start thinking about being centre stage for that big first dance moment, choose a medium tempo track about 3 minutes long and just go for it! Pre-arranged routines can give the Groom even more to worry about and often don’t work out as well as was hoped. Our advice – it’s your day, your moment, just relax and enjoy it freestyle and maybe ask the guests to join you half way through. Don’t forget to choose a fav finale track too and send your guests off to the bar wanting one more!

Party Rock Anthems!

A little nearer to your date we can start to get those special music requests in place for the important parts of the evening:

  • Think about that very special first dance song!
  • Decide if you want a favourite second song too. For weddings, often this is the time for the popular Father-Daughter dance, but we’ve had Mums and Sons too, it’s up to you!
  • Don’t let the last song be an afterthought – make sure you both agree on that final crowd-pleaser!

For the rest of the party night, think about a list of requests that you’d love to hear. Also, why not give your guests an input into the playlist by using our online music planner? No dull iPod playlists here, just your fav party tunes all neatly packaged up by your specialist DJs. It all comes as standard when it’s Showtime.

Time to Tailor!

How about adding some of these into your party to spice things up:

  • How about a twinkly starlit dance floor to top-up that memorable first dance magic?
  • Décor uplighting is a very cost-effective way to colour a big space to match your party vibe.
  • Everyone loves bubbles for the first dance and don’t worry it’ll be fine on the dress!
  • If the weather’s great, why not have the first dance outside in the open air?
  • Talk to us if you need to hire an extra PA system for speeches earlier in the day.
  • Chocolate fountains & Pick ‘n’ Mix candy buffets are a must for the evening sweetie.
  • Confetti launchers fired by your bridesmaids & ushers add a personal touch to the start and end of the evening – particularly for that BIG finale!
  • Big light shows aren’t just for TV & West End shows, some moving head lighting in your event package can add a real wow factor to your party space.

Wedding Bands

We think that any great party should have a mixture of a few cool things to make it stand out. A well-planned blend of DJ & live music can add that extra sparkle and keep the rockers happy too - after all, we both play other people’s songs right? The good thing about mixing it up is that the band and DJ can then play very different sets to keep the night fresh. The band can then concentrate on ‘Mustang Sally’ while we concentrate on dropping some upfront bangers for the late crowd.

If booking a live act too have a think about the following to make the best of the combo:

    • A great band means a big budget, think £1,500 upwards for an amazing show band.
    • Talk to us about handling the show as a seamless production, after all you don’t want the band packing down on the dance floor when the DJ turns up the heat later on.
    • As with any wedding service, make sure you’ve had a thorough consultation with the band and seen them play prior to booking. That way they can deliver the right vibe for your BIG night!
